An unreliable narrator is a first-person narrator whose tellingof the story is not completely accurate or credible due to problemswith the character's mental state (in the case of "Emergency,"drug-induced) or maturity. The term 'unreliable narrator' was firstused by Wayne C. Booth in 1961 in The Rhetoric of Fiction. Sincethen, many authors and filmmakers use the technique to createinterest and suspense in their narration. Some indicators that anarrator is unreliable include contradicting stories, incompleteexplanations of events, illogical information, and even questionsof the narrator's sanity.
Cite three instances of unreliability in "Emergency," anddescribe the effect it had on you emotionally as you were readingthe story.
