a The purpose of this lab is to improve your understanding of 2D strain states by having you make direct observations and measurements of a simulated deformation. You will make measurements and strain calculations, and then construct a plot that will correspond to Mohr's circle for strain. 1. Deformation Shown below is a set of grid lines that you could imagine were drawn on a sheet of material which was then strained to give the deformed lines in the second figure. J H K G F L M E N D o C Р B А Undeformed

K JIH G F M E E N N D o С Р B Deformed Q А

2. Measurement Use the supplied ruler and protractor to measure the original and final lengths of the segments and angles from the previous figure, and enter your measurements in the table below. Complete the table by computing the corresponding normal strains (e= 47L)) and shear strains (= - 0). Note that you need to compute the shear strain in radians, and you should enter y/2 in the table. Lo (in) Lin e deg) 1/2 (rad) Segment А B с D E F G H Segment Pair B. (deg) AI BJ СК DL EM FN GO HP IQ

3. Plotting the Results Use the simple grid below to construct a plot of normal strain vs. shear strain using the values from your table above. Be sure to use an equal scale for the normal and shear directions. You should get something that looks like half a Mohr's circle. If you think about the relation between each point you plotted and the original deformation, it should give you an enhanced understanding of what Mohr's circle for strain tells you.
