The long-term impacts of human-induced global warming on biodiversity and species could be catastrophic since changes to the landscape and native habitat as a result of human activity have put many of the unique species at risk. To clarify, healthy biodiversity, which includes all species of animals, birds, plants, fish, insects and microscopic organisms, is essential for human health and survival. However, a large number of species have become endangered due to global warming and pollution which are the results of human activities. A species is considered critically endangered if the population range is severely limited or fragmented, or the population is under 50 individuals. As per the latest report of the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF), there has been a 60 percent decline in the population of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians in just 40 years. Moreover, humans have significantly elevated greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide (CO2), in particular, has increased by about 38 percent from pre-industrial conditions. High levels of CO2 are slowly increasing the acidity of oceans. Many species respond to acidification by reduced growth rates, reduced abundance, and increased postmortem dissolution. If ocean acidification continues, marine extinctions and loss of ecosystem services to humans will be inevitable. Human activities contribute significantly to global warming, which has catastrophic impacts on societies and species as it worsens food security and biodiversity. To begin with, extreme weather events brought about by global warming threaten agricultural productivity and the food security of communities worldwide (Lloyd et al., 2021). According to the same author, the increase in temperatures, changes in precipitation patterns, and reductions in water availability all result in reduced agricultural productivity. As a consequence, climate change disrupts food availability, reduces access to food, and affects food quality. For example, the productivity of rain-fed agriculture has fallen by up to 50% in some countries, potentially undermining their food security (Leblois & Quirion, 2020). The authors point out that the area of arid and semi-arid land has also increased by between 5% and 8% in recent years. This is a significant concern as it exposes 70% of the population dependent on such crops to serious food insecurity. The increase in the intensity and frequency of fires, storms or periods of drought due to global warming adds to the threat to biodiversity which has already been placed under stress by other human activities. . Species such as polar bears, ringed seals and monarch butterflies are just a few examples of species that are at risk due to global warming. Considering the drawbacks of human impact on communities and species, one may infer that diseases due to malnutrition, shortened human lifespan and the extinction of many species are inevitable. All in all, due to the harm caused by the actions of humans, both humans and animal species are facing significant risks.
