QUESTION 1 Compound A (3-bromo-2-methylhexane) was produced when Compound B refluxed with hydrogen bromide. Compound A reacted with sodium hydroxide to form compound C. Compound D was produced when compound A reacted with ammonia in ethanol while compound E formed when compound A reacted with sodium cyanide. Compound C reacted with excess sulphuric acid at 170∘C to produce major Compound G. Compound C undergo esterification process with ethanoic acid to form Compound H. Compound F was formed when Compound C reacted with sodium while Compound J was formed when Compound C reacted with thionyl chloride. Compound C undergo oxidation to produce Compound I. (a) Identify the possible structural formulae for Compound A to J. [10 Marks] (b) Give TWO (2) differences between SN1 and SN2.
