1. The vertical gate in a water channel is partially open, as in the Figure below. Therein, both gate width channel half-width equal to w, p is the water density, h is water depth in the upstream of the gate, 0 is the angle of gate opening, vi and v2 are velocities at the upstream and exit of the gate, respectively. Assuming no change in water level and a hydrostatic pressure distribution, (i) Express streamwise hydrostatic forces in front of and behind the gate. (5 marks) (ii) Derive an expression for the streamwise gate-on-fluid force Fx on one-half of the gate as a function of (o, h, w, 0, vi). (10 marks) (ii) Calculate the Fx, as well as upstream and downstream streamwise hydrostatic forces when Vi = 0.8 m/s, h= 2 m, w = 1.5 m, and 0 = 50°. (5 marks) = V1 EXT 2 w h 2 Top View Side View
