Ben is 53 years old and has an intellectual disability. He lives
in Melbourne with his mother Mary, an 80 years old widow. Ben works
five days a week in the local library and swims in the local pool
once a week. he uses public transportation to go to work and to the
pool. Ben can manage most of his daily living activities
independently and likes his routine. Ben’s brother lives with his
partner and their kids in Geelong and comes to visit every month.
Mary rang the response team of the local disability services
organisation and explained that lately she feels more fragile and
would like to move to a nursing home. She is concerned about what
would happen with Ben and explained that in her view he cannot be
left alone and had never spent even one night away from home. Mary
also added that Ben is very anxious when encountering changes in
his routine. Mary feels there’s no point in talking with Ben about
her move as it will only make him anxious.
