Consider the system described by the reliability block diagram (RBD) below. 2 3 1 3 4 2 4 a) The states and capacities of each component are either 0 or 1 (i.e. binary). Does this also mean that this is a binary system? Give reasons for your answer. b) What is a structure function? Establish a structure function for this system. c) The components have the following reliabilities: P1=0.8, P2=0.8, p=0.9 P4=0.9. Establish an expression for the system reliability using the state-enumeration method, and then calculate the probability that the system will fail. d) What is the meant by a minimal cut vector? List all the minimal cut vectors for this system. e) Component 2 is replaced with one of the same type as component 4. Use the minimal cut vectors to calculate the exact system reliability. f) In the RBD above, components 2, 3 and 4 are appearing twice. Explain in general how to use the factoring algorithm for k-out-of-n systems where three or more components are repeated in the RBD structure, and use this procedure to perform the reliability calculations for the four- component system considered above (with replaced component 2).
