Jackie, a marine biologist hypothesizes that food consumption of
captive Bottlenose Dolphins is greater than the average captive
Dolphin population. In the population, the mean amount
of food in pounds eaten a day by dolphins is 13 lbs with a standard
deviation equal to 6 pounds. Jackie records the pounds
of food eaten by 20 Bottlenose Dolphins, whose age range from 10 to
25 years old. The sample mean for pounds eaten is 18
lbs. Is food consumption higher for Bottlenose Dolphins compared to
the average captive Dolphin population? Set alpha equal
to .05. (9 points)
a. Is this a one-tailed or two-tailed test?
b. State your hypotheses in symbols (include both
Hoand H1)
c. Set up the criteria for making a decision about the
Ho. That is, find the critical value, using alpha
= .05
d. Summarize the data into the appropriate test
statistic.
Show numerator/denominator = Answer
e. Evaluate the null hypothesis: Reject or Fail to Reject
(Retain)
f. What is your conclusion? (written statement)
g. What type of error may you have committed? Type I or
Type II
