An L-shaped bracket has a 50 kN force applied to it, at an angle of 300 from the horizontal, as shown in Figure Q3. The bracket is pinned at point B. 20 mm 50 kN 30° A Bracket 360 mm C 色 420 mm Side view of pin at B Figure Q3: Pinned bracket arrangement
(a) Draw a free body diagram showing all forces acting on the bracket. [] [3] Calculate: (b) The reaction force at point C. 3] [3] (c) The resultant force on the pin at B, and the angle which it acts at. [5] (d) The pin is made from steel with ultimate shear strength of 160 MPa. A safety factor of 2 is required. Calculate the required diameter of the pin. [5] (e) Calculate the bearing stress in the bracket, and hence specify the required tensile strength of the material for the bracket, given that a safety factor of 5 is required. [4]
