QA) An intermediate shaft of a gearbox, supporting two spur gears B and C, and mounted between two bearings A and D, is shown in Figure 1. The pitch circle diameters of gear B and C are 400 and 200 mm respectively. The shaft is made of alloy steel 20 MnCr5. (Sut= 620 MPa and Syt = 480 MPa). The factors ko and kt of the A.S.M.E. code are 2.0 and 1.5 respectively. The gears are keyed to the shaft. The permissible angle of twist for the shaft is 0.25° per meter length and the modulus of rigidity is 79.3 GPa.
