The dimensions of the bore and stroke length of an internal combustion engine cylinder are 78mm and 83.6mm respectively. The cylinder is used in a 4 stroke spark ignition IC engine, whose compression ratio is 9.4, and the air-to-fuel ratio is 20. a) Sketch the complete ideal pV diagram for the power generation cycle referred to above, labelling all significant processes and energy transfers. [5 marks] b) Determine the clearance length of the cylinder, and also the mass of air contained within the cylinder. [5 marks] c) Given that the temperature of the ambient air, and hence the temperature at the beginning of the compression process is 20°C, find the temperatures in Kelvin) at the remaining three distinct states of the four process cycle. [8 marks] Determine the net work (in kJ) produced by the cycle, and hence the thermal efficiency of the ideal cycle. [4 marks] If the stroke length of the cylinder was increased so that its' cubic capacity increased to 500 cm (the bore dimension remaining unchanged), what will be the new mass of air contained within the cylinder? [3 marks]
