It focuses on urban design and conservation issues facing the
town centre of Stevenage New Town in Hertfordshire. Stevenage was
one of the first post-war New Towns to be established. In recent
years it has suffered a series of issues including a declining town
centre which is not ‘legible’ on foot, with convoluted, and unclear
pathway arrangements – into and around the town centre and
predominance of design that favours vehicle movement. At the same
time it can be considered a prime example of the heritage of
post-war design and planning and thus its buildings and urban
spaces might be thought to have conservation value.
Question:
What urban design and conservation informed reasons are there to
renew or retrofit Stevenage town centre?
What are the urban design and conservation principles and
techniques that in your view would be best suited to inform any
redevelopment or retrofitting of the town centre?
