As a graduate engineer you have been tasked with designing the reinforcement for the floor system shown in Figure 1 given the floor is subjected to a live load of 4 kPa and a superimposed dead load of 1 kPa. Your mentor has suggested that you keep the slab the same thickness throughout the entire 3-bay span and that you restrict your design to bars of less than 16 mm diameter for the slab and less than 24 mm diameter for the beam. It has further been recommended that: (0) the neutral axis depth factor k, should be restricted to less than 0.3 to ensure adequate ductility, (ii) the use a single bar diameter throughout will simplify the detailing, (iii) all sections must be under-reinforced, and (iv) to design for load combinations of 1.2G +1.50 To complete the task: 1) Produce a sketch of each slab cross-sections showing the diameter and location of all reinforcement 2) Produce a sketch of the beam showing the extent and details of the reinforcement - you may apply the simplified approach in AS3600 clause 8.3.1.5 to do this. 3) Provide calculations to justify your design.

Apply the following assumptions: Ignore capacity reduction factors Concrete: . f = 32 MPa • E = 30 000 MPa Reinforcement: . E. = 200 GPa • f = 500 MPa • minimum cover to all surfaces of the beam from the edge of the bar = 40 mm minimum spacing between bars = 40 mm Hints: 1. You will not be able to exactly achieve the moment capacity in each cross section because you have a discrete number and diameter of reinforcing bars. You need to ensure that the cross section capacity exceeds the design action M* at each location without being excessively overdesigned. 2. You may wish to start by checking if the moment capacity at each design point can be reached using a singly reinforced section. If the design action exceeds that which results in a singly reinforced section, then you will need to design a doubly reinforced section.
