EXCALIBUR CASE: GOLDEN THREAD COMPANY You have just accepted the position of head of human resources at Golden Thread, an up-and-coming important export company. The Company was launched about ten years ago, and since then it has received many awards for achievement in the textile sector. Golden Thread enjoys and excellent financial position. It has been selling to the U.S. since the Company's early days, and over the past 18 months has struck many agreements in Europe and Asia. Golden Thread's main shareholder is also general manager of the Company, and overworked individual with a strong entrepreneurial approach. There is often a need to conduct last minute negotiations over the phone, but despite the pressure, the GM remains upbeat and pleased that business is doing well. The GM has asked you to give priority to settling the problem of recruiting and administrative assistant for him. He has had three since the beginning of the year, and they all left of their own accord. He is trying to understand what happened. He adds that the previous assistant spent nearly eight years with the Company, but left because of health problems. Since then, new assistants have come and gone through the revolving door. As you speak to the GM, he asserts his proficiency at selling a position to a skeptical candidate. You also find out that hefty payments were made to three different employment agencies over the past year.

2022. You are required to address the following: 1. Summarize your understanding of the problem. Use no more than five lines. 2. Consider the job of an administrative assistant. What tasks are required in the job ? What competencies are necessary to perform those tasks. Explain two strategies to for designing the job to ensure that the new recruit is motivated. Prepare a job description based on your analysis. 3. In light of the information provided in the case, what steps should be taken (at least four) to ensure the success of the recruitment process. 4. Explain to the GM why the selection process should be adapted to fit the organization's job specifications. For the job of administrative assistant, select two kinds of tests you would think would be most important to include in the selection process. Explain why you chose those tests. 5. When the new administrative assistant is selected explain to the GM who should be involved in the onboarding process of new employees? Why would it not be appropriate to provide this process online? 6. The GM also thinks that that the performance management system is the same as the annual performance appraisal. Explain at least four differences. 7. Recommend five possible strategies to reduce labour turnover.
