Last year, you received a phone call from an employee, AC, who
was currently one of nine full time members of a project team
created to review the compatibility of existing financial and
information technology systems with anticipated changes in energy
technologies and increasing GY’s customer base. The project team is
based in Western Australia. The leader of the project team HB had
been employed by GY for 30 years, apart from AC the other team
members have been employed by GY for no less than 12 years.
Apparently, it was common practice for the leader to instigate long
lunches on Fridays which were held at the local hotel. AC attended
only one of these lunches. On return to work after these lunches
there were frequent comments made of an intimidating or sexual
nature. AC told you that they felt uncomfortable working in the
team and was concerned that their contributions to the work of the
team were not recognised by HB despite HB’s frequent praise of the
work of other team members. AC has tried to voice their concerns
with other team members. The other team members with whom they
spoke told them that HB was a great boss, not to worry about it and
it was in their best interests to “get over it”.
AC is the only team member who holds postgraduate
qualifications, does not have children nor share the social
connections that exist between the other team members.
1. Use, as relevant, similarity attraction theory, social
identity theory and social categorisation theory to examine the
situation; and
2. Suggest a solution to AC’s circumstances.
