1)For safety in climbing, a mountaineer uses a 57-m long nylon
rope that is 1.6 cm in diameter. When supporting a 76-kg climber,
the rope elongates 1.3 m. Find the Young's modulus for the rope
material. Give your answer in MN/m2. (i.e. mega
newton/sq m)
2)A solid ball of diameter 1.4 m is dropped in the ocean, where
it falls down to a depth of 6 km. What will be the fractional
decrease in the volume of the ball (i.e. ΔV / V) due to the
pressure of the water?
Bulk modulus of ball = 2 x
108 N/m2. Density of sea water =
1024 kg/m3.
