3.2 Imagine that we place a dipole a distance r away from a neutral atom as shown below. (a) Draw an arrow representing the electric field vector produced by the dipole at the location of the atom. Hint: you can use the picture of the electric field of a dipole from the presentation on charge distributions (b) What does the field do to the (i) electrons and (ii) the nucleus of the atom? Explain why. (c) Draw point particles to at the locations of the electrons and the nucleus of the atom under the influence of the electric field of the dipole. (d) The polarized atom will now exert a force on the dipole. Draw an arrow representing the electric field vector produced by the polarized polarized atom at the location of the dipole. Using this, determine the direction of the force exerte on the dipole by the polarized atom. Hint: consider the force on each of the point particles as a vector, and add these to find the net force on the dipole. (c) What is the charge of the polarized atom? What is the charge of the dipole? Dipole Neutral atom
