Our eating behavior is regulated by a large number of physiological, social, situational, and emotional cues. One team of researchers decided to explore how the presence of other people affects how much people eat. They offered a variety of plates of food to people in a laboratory dining room made to look like a home kitchen. Participants were randomly assigned to sit at a table with either one other person or with three other people. In addition, the other people at the table were either the participants' close friends or were confederates of the researcher. The confederates were instructed to keep the conversation lighthearted.
