At the hockey game last week, the Edina Hornets forwardintercepted a pass to head down towards our goalie on a breakaway. The forward was moving at 8 m/s when he intercepted the pass. Hecontinued at that constant speed. Sawyer, our forward, was 2mbehind him when the puck was intercepted. Anticipating thebreakout, Sawyer accelerated from rest the instant the Edina playertouched the puck. Sawyer accelerated at a constant rate (5.2 m/s2),and back checked the Edina player (interfered with his stick so hecouldn’t shoot) just as he was about to take a shot. How far didthe Edina player get before Sawyer took away his glory? Non-hockeyinterpretation – Edina player got the puck while he was moving at 8m/s. Sawyer was 2m behind the Edina player, and startedaccelerating towards him, at a constant rate, the instant the Edinaplayer got the puck. How far did the two players travel before theywere at the same location?
