Assignment: In the fields of cellular and molecular biology (including genomics, proteomics, synthetic biology, genetics, etc.), various theories and paradigms have been proposed and established for the past century. However, with an ever-increasing sophistication in the technologies and newer discoveries, several of these theories/paradigms have either proven to be wrong or had to be modified to account for variations. Your task is to write about three such paradigms/theories that have proven to be wrong or needed to be significantly overhauled. See details below.
Here is an example of a molecular paradigm that required a major shift: According to the central dogma, it was initially thought that DNA leads to RNA, and RNA leads to protein- sort of like a one-way traffic. However, with the discovery of reverse transcriptase, it was found that RNA could go back and be converted into DNA. As a result, the central dogma had to be modified. Likewise, when you find three such theories/paradigms, make sure you- - Indicate the original theory and the new current one - Indicate who proposed the original theory, on what experimental basis and in which year - Indicate what experimentation/discovery led to the establishment of the new theory and by whom and when - Indicate why it was necessary to revamp the original paradigm
