B. Observing Cyanobacteria Cyanobacteria are a special category of bacteria that can perform photosynthesis. As a group, these can range in size from 2μm−40μm. That means some are surprisingly large for prokaryotic cells. In addition to their potentially large size, cyanobacteria are noteworthy because they can perform photosynthesis. Their name "cyano" means blue or blue green- reflecting the fact that these organisms have a blue-green hue. This color is derived from green (chlorophyll a) and blue pigments that help drive photosynthesis (pigments are complex proteins that have a specific color). Note that cyanobacteria have pigments, but do not have any membrane bound organelles. Question 4: Look at the image above. Based on their shape and how they are grouped, what name would you give these cyanobacteria that are forming chains? See the information in the pre-lab lab handout under "Prokaryotic cells" for terms describing shape and grouping. Question 5: Cyanobacteria are often mistakenly called "blue-green algae". What cellular differences would you use to determine that cyanobacteria are bacteria and not algae?
