A metal alloy is a solution of metals. Different metals can combine relatively easily with one another to form a homogeneous solid solution because of the nature of metallic bonds. Metal alloys of ten have significantly different set of properties than the individual properties of the metals they contain. Some examples include, brass, gold alloy, steel and cast iron. Your task is to: - Pick four alloys of your choice and explore how the addition of small amounts of certain metal(s) produces desired properties (physical and chemical) in the alloy. - Also, clearly differentiate how the properties of the alloy differ from those of the pure metal (solvent). - Ultimately connect your research (where possible) to the concepts learned in this unit: metallic bonding, electron configuration, physical vs. chemical properties - conductivity, reactivity. density, durability etc.
