Tivo reacfions are shown below. Both of these roactions aro the sametuind of reaction, but they are known to occur through. very different mochanisms. Because of the difforent reaction mechanisms, we obsorvo they follow different rate laws. Reaction A occurs through what's known as the S12 mechanism. whirst reaction 8 occurs through the S,1 mochanism. Theso are named after tho overail order of the roaction. Reaction A: H3C−OH2−Br+NaOH⟶HaBr Reaction B: We observe that reaction A is first order with respect to [NaOH, but reaction B is zero order with respect to [NaOH]. Both reactions are first order with respect to the concentration of the organic molecule. QUESTIONS 1. What type of reaction are the two reactions shown above? [1 mark] 2. a) Name the organic product of reaction B and state whether it is a primary, secondary or tertiary alcohol. [2 marks] b) Name the organic molecule you could mix with with NaOH to form 2-methyl-butan-1-ol [1 mark] 3. Explain why reaction A is said to be second order overall and why reaction B is said to be first order overall. [1 mark]
