Knudsen flow and membrane separations Porous glass membranes are one option for the separation of light gases in such separations Knudsen diffusion is often dominant. One membrane having an average pore diameter of 40 angstroms in processes with upstream pressures 'less than' 120 psia and downstream pressure of 15 psia is calibrated with pure helium resulting in a constant permeability of 117,000 barrer, additional experiments with carbon dioxide result in a permeability of 68,000 barrer. Assuming that the helium was predominantly in Knudsen flow (based on the calibration result) predict the permeability of carbon dioxide. Is the result (model predicted) for carbon dioxide in agreement with the experimental results? Discuss the results. Note: The textbook is very important / useful in understanding membrane/filter topics / information.
