a) A simply supported beam carrying plaster is to span 5 m and support uniformly distributed characteristic dead and imposed loads of 250kN/m and 150kN/m respectively. The beam sits on 200 mm long bearings at supports, and both flanges of the steel section are laterally and torsionally restrained (see fig.1). An 838×292×176UB section in grade S355 has been selected for the design.
