1. Simple framed beam-column A Universal Column (UKC) is to be chosen for an internal column in a simple framed building. The column is held in position but not rotationally restrained in either the major or minor axis directions at its top and bottom, and it is 4.25 metres in length (floor to floor). The beam reactions from the primary beams connecting to the column flanges are 230kN and 165kN on the two flanges, and the secondary beams connecting to either side of its web have end reactions of 40kN and 20kN. The axial load from the floors above is 1350kN. All loads are factored loads at the Ultimate Limit State. Choose a suitable UKC in S275 steel to meet the Simple Design Criteria from the Concise Eurocode P362. You should make the fullest possible use of the Member Capacities parts (the pink and green pages) of the section tables P363, as this question is testing your ability to use those pages. You should note that to calculate the member capacities by hand rather than using the pink or green pages will take far more time than is intended for this question, and will in any case not result in the desired marks.
