a) Sketch an engineering stress-strain diagram for ceramics, metals and polymers indicating the level of toughness of these materials. Thereafter, choose the type of material with ONE (1) reason that is suitable to reduce the effect of sudden impact. [10 marks] b) A load of 4000 N is applied to a titanium wire with a diameter of 0.40 cm. Compute to find out whether the wire will deform elastically or plastically and whether the wire will show necking. Given the yield strength and tensile strength of the wire is 305MPa and 360 Pa respectively. [10 marks] c) A tensile load of 20kN is applied on a wire made of a copper alloy having an elastic modulus of 120GPa and an original diameter of 5.8 mm. Compute the resultant elongation if the original length of the wire is 10 m. [6 marks] d) Material J is suggested to be used as a rod with the applied stress up to 150MPa Material J has a yield strength of 340MPa and the safety factor is 2. Interpret with ONE (1) reason whether this material can be used for the desired application [4 marks]
