Marble and similar stone floor tiles are finished to final thickness in a wet belt grinding machine. Tiles are continuously fed into the belt grinder with a rubber conveyor belt. A stainless steel bed plate supported the conveyor belt under the grinding head. The support plate's flatness determines the tiles' thickness and uniformity. The weak link in the system was the belt support plate. The rubber conveyor belt was covered on both sides by a slurry of marble detritus and loose aluminium oxide grit. The erosion on the plate affected the tile thickness. The plate had to be replaced almost monthly. Several harder corrosion-resistant metals were tested as a support plate, but the improvement in wear was not worth the cost. Finally, aluminium oxide wear tiles were epoxied to the stainless steel support plate, which its wear life exceeded over a year. Ceramics like aluminium oxide (Al2O3) is one of example of hard materials to solve abrasive wear in hostile environments. Suggest and discuss 1 (ONE) example of hard materials that is suitable for improving abrasive wear resistance. The discussion should include the type of atomic bonding, crystal structure, melting point and mechanical properties of both materials with the support of images.
