Your company has been assigned to evaluate two pumps; Pump Megatron and Pump Omicron to be used at various locations in this country to pump water from one large reservoir to another large reservoir that is at a higher elevation as shown in Figure 1. The free surfaces of both reservoirs are exposed to atmospheric pressure. The piping system specifications at the various locations are provided in Table 1 Figure 1: Water pump with piping system Table 1: Dimensions and minor loss coefficients for piping system
1. For Pump Megatron, the pump performance is approximated by the expression: Havaitable =H0−aQ2H0=24.4a=0.0678 m/Lpm2 By varying Q from 0Lpm to 20Lpm, plot the Hrequired and Havalablio on a clearly labeled graph and determine the operating head and flow rate. 2. For Pump Omicron, the pump performance data is shown in Table 2 below. represented by the curve. On the same graph, plot the Hreguiee versus Q and indicate the operating point. Table 2: Pump Omicron performance data Lom: Litres per minute 3. Evaluate if Pump Omicron is suitable to replace Pump Megatron in order to double the capacity. Show all work, calculations and tabulated data. [Note: Assume density of water at 20∘C is 1000 kg/m3 ]
At location B: Hoad loss is, Ii=(fDL+∑K)2 sV2Hi=(0.04+0.0203180+(0.5+18+0.9+1.05))⋅2+9.81V2ini=19.12 V2 Head required is given by. Hmpand = If 1−(÷1−72)
Friction factor from moody chart is, f=0.04 At location A: Head loss is. fi=(fDL+∑K)2gV2f1=(0.04=0.0203176+(0.5+175+0.92+1.05))+2+9.81V2f1=18.69V2 Head required is given by, Hmapain =h1−(21−22)
Graph of H vs Q: H=53.7−1.51Q
