Consider a wall construction that is made of 4 -in. brick (140lb/ft3) with 3.5-in. insulation (0.4−2.0lb/ft3) between 2×4 southern cypress studs at 16in. on center. The studs utilize 0.5-in. sheathing (25lb/ft3) and 0.375 in. gypsum board. When needed, assume reflective air space with 50∘F mean temperature and 30∘F temperature difference. Calculate: (a) The overall heat-transfer coefficient for this wall during the summer. (b) The pereentage of heat gain that has been prevented by the insulation. Attach to your hand calculations summary tables similar to Table 5-4a.
