a) Water at atmospheric pressure, with a free stream velocity u∞=0.5 m/s and uniform temperature T∞=20∘C flows over a flat plate. The surface temperature of the plate is Ts= 60∘C and the plate is L=0.4 m long. Use as thermophysical properties of water: ρ=1000 kg/m3,cp=4200 J/kg⋅K,μ=3×10−4 N⋅s/m2,Pr=1.9,k=0.7 W/m⋅K. i) Determine if the boundary layer has transitioned to turbulent flow over the surface of the plate when the critical Reynolds number is 5×105. [5 Marks] ii) Determine the average convection coefficient over the entire top surface of the plate. [8 Marks] iii) Determine the convection heat flux at the top surface of the plate. [2 Marks] b) Consider a hemispherical furnace of diameter D=2 m with a flat base. The dome of the furnace is black, and the base has an emissivity of 0.7. The base and the dome of the furnace are maintained at uniform temperatures of 200 K and 800 K, respectively. Determine the net rate of radiation heat transfer from the dome to the base surface during steady operation. [10 Marks]
