Q1. A brake consists of a flexible belt on the periphery of a wheel of 500 mm diameter rotating in anti-clockwise direction at 600 RPM initially as shown in Figure Q2. One end of the belt is attached to a fixed pin A and the other end B is subjected to a pulling force of P to give a braking torque of 200Nm. The angle of lap is 200∘ and the coefficient of friction between the belt and the wheel, μ is 0.3. (a) Sketch Figure Q2 on your Answer Sheet and label the tight side and slack side of the belt in your sketch diagram. (6 marks) (b) Calculate the tensions in the belt. (8 marks) (c) Calculate the pulling force P. (8 marks) (d) Determine the time taken to stop the wheel after applying the braking torque if the moment of inertia of the wheel is 100kgm2. (8 marks)
