En Karim installed a hot water heater 3 years ago in his office and recently the heater cost him an increase of bill electricity. As an engineer that specializes on heat transfer system, your task is to reduce the cost by adding insulation around the heater system. The hot water heater system build up is as follows. The water metal tank is 1.5 m high with diameter 42 cm consists of hot water at 60°C and the heat transfer coefficients is hi=50 W/m2K. The whole water metal tank is covered by an insulation foam (k=0.03 W/m.K) and another cylinder metal tank size 1.5 m high and diameter 48 cm in order to prevent the heat escape to outside. The heater system is located in a store room where the heat transfer coefficient is ho = 12 W/m2K and surrounding temperature is 28°C. As an engineer assigned to do the task, determine: a) the complete thermal resistance diagram and the total heat transfer Q release by the system [5 Marks) [CO2, PO3] b) the cost of energy loss per year if the price of electricity is RM 0.218/kWh, and [3 Marks] [CO2, PO3] To prevent the money loss, your suggestion is to add more insulation by wrapping the outer tank with 3 cm thick fiberglass insulation (k=0.04 W/ mK). The cost of fiberglass is RM 100. Draw the new thermal resistance diagram and determine: c) the amount of heat can be saved by adding this insulation and how many days does it take get the amount of money return from this insulation, Mr.
