Example: A new light jet aircraft design is being evaluated as regards its operational safety. Of particular interest is its climb and glide performance. At the current stage of the design process, the aircraft has the following characteristics: Mass = 1250 kg Gross Wing Area = 10 m2 Drag Polar: Cp = 0.02 + 0.032 CL2 = (a) Initial work deals with the forced landing case. Calculate: (1) the EAS corresponding to the minimum rate of descent of the aircraft, and the true airspeeds represented by that value at Mean Sea Level and at an altitude of 1500 feet (p = 1.16 kg.m-?) (ii) the rate of descent achieved at that airspeed at both altitudes = (b) Later calculations concern the steep (maximum angle) and maximum rate of climb cases. If the aircraft has a maximum level flight speed of 378 km/hr EAS, find the maximum angle and maximum rate of climb of the aircraft for a take-off at MSL
