Assume that the ulna can be represented as bar. The ulna has been fractured and has a gap of 1cm. The total length of the ulna is 30 cm. The area of the ulna is 10 cm? The elastic modulus of the ulna is 15 GPa, while the modulus of the tissue in the gap is 10 MPa. You are an orthopaedic surgeon and choose to fix the fractured ulna with a stainless steel plate. The stainless steel plate has an area of 2 cm’and a stiffness of 240 GPa. The ulna with fixation and loading can be idealized as below: Gap Plate Ulna a) ) Assuming the load is 200 N, compute the total strain in the gap. Note: The gap + bone may be analyzed as serially connected, perfectly contacting elastic materials. The composite gap + bone and the plate may next be analyzed as parallelly connected, perfectly contacting elastic materials. b) Assuming the load is 200 N, how much strain occurs in the gap if no fixation plate is put on the ulna? What would you expect to happen in both cases a) and b) according to Perren's Interfragmentary Strain Theory? e)
