Goal: The purpose of this assignment is to develop a deeper understanding of estimating quantities for a ra construction project, to practice network analysis, also to present calculations in the form of reports. Description: A small project comprises the construction of two identical houses in two different locations. Each house includes five activities, descriptions and precedence relationships of which are given in the following table. Activity Description Predecessor(s) A Site leveling B Excavation с Reinforcement installation A,B D Formwork placement с E Casting concrete D The quantity of earth works for “Site leveling” activity needs to be estimated with respect to the grid view shown in Fig. 1 and by using the “Grid Method”. Fig. 1 displays a 10 m grid survey of levels taken on the construction site which is required to be brought to a level of 56 m. Quantity of earth works for “Excavation” activity should be determined by using the dimensions of the trench shown in Fig. 2 with a width and a depth of 2.00 m and 1.75 m, respectively. Quantities for “Reinforcement installation”, “Formwork placement", and "Casting concrete” activities are already estimated as 380 tons, 800 m², and 1,600 m², respectively. The crew assigned for “Site leveling” activity is formed of 1 Truck and 2 Graders which can work with an output rate of 35.5 m3/hr. Productivity for "Excavation” activity is estimated to be 2.4 man-hours/m² and a crew
formed of 4 Labors and 1 General Foreman is assigned for this activity. Crew assigned for “Reinforcement installation" activity is formed of 1 Steel Worker and 1 Labor which can work with an output rate of 20 ton/day. Productivity for “Formwork placement" activity is estimated to be 0.44 man-hours/m² and a crew formed of 3 Carpenters and 1 General Foreman is assigned for this activity. Assumptions: 1. There will be two specialized crews concurrently available for any of the activities (e.g., Crew Al: responsible for activity Al, Crew A2: responsible for activity A2, etc.) except for “Reinforcement installation” activity, for which there will only be a single specialized crew available (i.e., Crew C: responsible for both activities Cl and C2). 2. An 8-hour working schedule is considered. 3. Quantities and as a result the durations for the same type of activities will be identical in both the houses. 4. In earth works activities the compacted volume of soil will remain the same as its bank volume. 5. For the "Site leveling" activities, only the overall additional (-or-required) quantity of soil that needs to be removed from (-or-brought to the construction site is considered. Requirements: You are asked to perform the following operations: a. Construct the Activity-on-Arrow (AOA) network for the complete project, comprising construction of 2 houses, by using the Laddering Technique. b. Calculate Early Event Times (EET), Late Event Times (LET), and Total Project Time (TPT), i.e., fill-in the AOA network developed in “Parta”. c. Determine Late Start Time (LST) of only “Formwork placement" activity of the first house. d. Determine by how many days can “Casting concrete” activity of the first house be delayed without affecting the Early Start Time (EST) of any of its succeeding activities. Notes: Show all your work for full credit. Your report can be submitted either as a single "Microsoft Word' or a 'PDF file. A soft-copy of your report should be uploaded to ‘Moodle' page of the course. There will be a penalty of 25% for late submittal of the reports. Reports submitted after 29th of April 2022, 23:59, will not be evaluated.
