A residential development will be built in Tafton, PA, and a small water treatment plant is needed. You, a local engineer, have been asked to design the dimensions of the: rapid mixing tanks, flocculation tanks, settling tanks, and filters; as well as determine the layout of the plant. The design must meet the regulations in the 10 State Standards (Chapter 4). The plant is to be designed for a flow of 15 mgd. Additional design parameters are given below: -There shall be a minimum of 2 tanks and a maximum of 5 tanks for each process. The total footprint of plant shall not exceed the lot size of 200ft x 400ft, which is approximately 1.5 acres. -There is an administrative building that is 100ft x 50ft on the lot. Walkways between tanks shall be 3ft minimum -Roadways between each process shall be 12ft minimum to allow for vehicular access. Rapid -mixers: a square tank is recommended. The depth of the tank is not to exceed 10ft. The power requirement (P) is 2001b-ft2/s. Note: For the site, there is no limits for the rapid mixers volume per tank. -Flocculation Tanks: a rectangular or circular tank, with low turbidity, is recommended as per dimensions given in Table 5.2 of text. Settling tanks: a rectangular tank with peripheral weirs is recommended as per dimensions given in Table 5.2 of text. (Note: When checking the velocity, check the vertical velocity) -Filters: use rapid sand filters with a loading rate of 3 gpm/ft2 with a minimum of 4 filters -Determine the 10 state standards for each process, as well as the site overall site requirements (limitations, what needs to be included, etc) -Design the rapid mixer - volume number of tanks and dimensions -Flocculation Tanks - volume required, number of tanks and dimensions Settling Tanks - volume required, number of tanks and dimensions -Filters - number of filters and dimensions -Reminder: Check the 10 state standards, as applicable. For example: for the settling tank check the hydraulic loading rate (gal per day/ft2), go, and the weir loading (gal per day/linear ft). Also sketch a layout (to scale) for the water treatment plant. The layout of the components should be logical based on the order of the treatment process.
