They take 1,000 two- and three-year-olds who have never seen Sesame Street before and randomly assign 500 to watch Sesame Street daily for 2 months and 500 to not watch Sesame Street. Speech pathologists then scored each child's verbal ability. Verbal ability is operationally defined as the number of words spoken with an adult researcher during a 5 minute conversation.
