Nutrition quackery is a term which refers to fake practitionersand products and the deceitful promotion of these products. Untrueor misleading claims that are deliberately or fraudulently made forany product constitute nutrition quackery. Sometimes we will listento someone else's entertaining stories, or anecdotes, where theyprovide us with anecdotal evidence (something that happened to thembut has no basis in the scientific method whatsoever).
1) Find, describe and explain an advertisement you find for adietary product (anything related to nutrition) you've seenrecently (i.e radio or magazine ad, internet pop-up ad, etc.) andhow it stacked up against the list of traits commonly associatedwith nutrition quackery. Tell us what the product was, what kindsof claims the ad made, and several reasons why you were (or wereNOT) convinced that the product's claims were scientifically sound.Use comparisons between the product and the types of claims citedby asking the questions summarized in Table 1.1 in text/eText tosupport your conclusion as well as the other information youread.
2) Importantly, be aware the disclaimer which must be used toindicate a product has not been tested is: "These statements havenot been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Thisproduct is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent anydisease" (see this in the Code of Federal Regulations).
