THE EFFECTS OF HEAT ON LAND AND WATER 20 pointsThe sun heats up Earth’s landmasses and oceans. The weather andclimate onEarth are dependent on this transfer of heat energy. All thephenomena that accompanyweather such as winds, tornadoes, hurricanes, and rain, snow, andocean waves alsodepend on this heat energy. The continental masses heat up and coolmore quickly thanwater masses. Air flows from a region of higher pressure to one oflower pressurecausing breezes and winds. Land masses take in more heat on theirsurface so that duringthe long days of summer these areas are hot. Because waterdistributes heat evenly itabsorbs the heat and the breezes from the oceans cool the landduring summer. Butduring winter the land loses all its heat and is colder than theshore. Water in the oceansnow gives up its stored heat to keep those areas warmer.Chapter 18 has information concerning these effects.Materials:2 regular size paper cups (plastic or Styrofoam are OK but pleaseconsider theenvironment)Soil (potting soil is good)Water2 thermometers (Regular thermometers that can go into water. If youare oncampus you can contact Pam Lamontagne to borrow some. You can alsotryHome Depot for outdoor thermometers that are small enough to fityour cups.Human thermometers don’t go low enough for the range weneed.)Lamp with a 60 watt bulb or higher; you need a lamp that createsheat as you aretrying to recreate the exposure to the sun in this lab. Heat savinglight bulbs willnot produce the results we are looking for.Procedure:1. Fill both containers about ½ full. Fill one with soil and onewith water. Placethem in a room temperature situation.2. Put these out overnight (about 12 hours) so that they are aboutthe sametemperature when you start the lab.3. Place a thermometer in each.4. Place both containers under the lamp.5. Measure the temperatures at the start and again after 1hour.6. Now place both containers in the refrigerator and leave them for1 hour. Thenmeasure the temperature again.
