Case Study The vitreous humor changes as you age. The usually gel-like substance that gives your eye shape and holds your retina in place can liquify as it breaks down over time. This may be interpreted by patients as an increase in eye floaters as their vision is impacted by changes in vitreous consistency. For some individuals, the vitreous will separate from the surface of the retina without any complications. Sometimes, the separation of the vitreous pulls on the retina, causing it to tear. Although painless, this injury should not be left untreated. Once the retina is torn, the liquid vitreous can pool behind the retina and result in retinal detachment. ● Based on your knowledge of retinal function, propose some symptoms a patient with retinal detachment may experience.
