Below is ONE question with in depth key points that should be inthe answer. Then I followed it with my answer - This is already acompleted assignment, but I am reviewing and want to know what keypoints I missed and what I can do to improve the overall answer.Thank you!!
Question:
The brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease show degradationof microtubule function, in part from over-phosphorylation of themicrotubule-associated protein, tau. What might happen to neuronswhen microtubule function is disrupted? In your answer, be specificabout which structures within neurons are likely to be affected bymicrotubule disruptions and how they would be affected, and explainyour reasoning. (You should be able to answer this question in nomore than one brief paragraph.)
Key points: (again these are key points inanswering the one question)
(1) (2 points) If microtubules are disrupted, this would beexpected to affect the structure of the neuron. Since tau islimited to axons, the axon should be abnormal, but the dendritesshould be normal.
(2) (1 point) If axonal microtubules are damaged, this wouldalso interfere with axonal transport.
(3) (1 point) Without axonal transport, the synapses could notbe maintained.
My answer:
"Microtubules are basically the cytoskeleton proteins which alsopresent in the nervous system and it helps in the maintenance ofthe neurons. Neurons are composed of mainly two parts, axons anddendrites. In neurons, microtubules are the long cylindricalcytoskeleton structure over the neurons and help in the defining ofthe axons and dendrites. And the "tau" protein is also associatedwith the microtubules where phosphorylated tau protein helps in thestability maintenance of microtubules in the axons. If tau proteinis highly phosphorylated then it results in the degradation of themicrotubules. As a result axons and dendrites which were coveredwith the microtubules as the cytoskeleton, it will be lost and theaxons and dendrites will not be shaped and ultimately cause theneurodegenerative disease. As a result, patient will not be havingany regulation on the neuronal signals, there will be no signalsynapses."
Please let me know what of all 3 "key points" mentioned abovethat I missed and how I might improve upon them (As thisconcept/question type may come up in class again)
