Sheela married Soudesh on 14 February 2021. After they were married, Sheela wanted to get a part-time job and go shopping for some modern clothes. Soudesh did not permit Sheela to work. Sheela was upset about how Soudesh was treating her but she didn’t say anything to him because she did not want more trouble. I have a car from before their marriage but Soudesh only permits her to drive it with him when he accompanies me to do the shopping. Their son Pritam was born on 2 February 2021. She was pregnant in early 2021 but Soudesh forced her to have an abortion. One time when she was pregnant with Pritam,
Soudesh got angry because his dinner was cold. He said to her you are so dumb! You can’t even cook a hot dinner! I don’t know why I put up with you! Get away from me, I don’t want to look at you!” He slapped her across her face and pushed her hard up against a brick wall. This wasn’t the first time Soudesh had done something like this. Just after they were married, Soudesh asked her to clean the windows of his car. He was not happy with the job and shouted at her saying she is a useless wife.
Another time when Pritam was only 6 months old, he screamed at her, “This is my home, get out! Get out, get out!” Sheela was holding Matthew at the time and Soudesh punched her in the jaw and slapped me across the head several times. She could smell alcohol on Soudesh’s breath. A few weeks later Sheela was trying to settle Pritam who was teething. Suddenly Soudesh threw a kettle at her and said, “Get that baby to shut up or I will shut it up for you!”. The kettle just missed my head and smashed the window behind me. Sometimes Soudesh would get angry and leave the home for days staying in one of his investment properties.
During these times Sheela often needed money for food. Sheela have felt very alone. Because of Soudesh, she have lost contact with friends and families. She did not call the police because she was scared of Soudesh’s reaction. Soudesh picked a fight with her just after nine months of marriage and police was informed of the matter and so, he was given a warning. She was very distressed about everything that has happened. Her doctor has referred her to a psychologist. She lived in the matrimonial home. Soudesh has made it clear he regards it as his home because the title is registered in his name only and he pays all the bills and mortgage. She changed the locks just in case Soudesh got one of his brothers to bother her. Last week, Soudesh turned up at the home. I was scared so talked to him through the security door. He angrily said to me this is my house. You have no right to be here. Get out! She slammed shut the main door. He kept shouting through the door, this is not your house, get out. Give me my son, he is better off with her and her family. He was also banging his fist against the door. He then left. She was so frightened, she called the police. She is scared he will return.
