Purpose In this assignment you will find examples of wound healing in trees. Exploring tree wounds might not seem directly related to propagating plants, but every time you take a cutting, graft or bud, you are wounding the plant. We make the assumption that the plant will heal over the wound. Understanding wounds and wound healing is also an important aspect of growing and caring for plants. The purpose of this assignment is to: Walk around outside and become more observant of wounds on trees. Recognize different types of common tree wounds such as graft unions, pruning cuts, and injuries due to other causes. Instructions This week's activity focuses on what you learned this week about grafts, budding, and wounds. You will find completing the lesson is helpful when completing this assignment. Head out for a walk in your neighborhood or local park. Find an example of one of these three types of wounds: . Graft union Pruning cut • Injury
1. Take 2 photos of the wound example you find. One photo should show the wound in context of the tree and the second photo should be a close-up to show the detail of the wound, with evidence of healing, ie. callus development around the wound site. Label the photos with arrows and/or text to clearly identify the wound, 2. In 2 sentences identify the type of wound: graft, budding, pruning, or injury and how you identified it. 3. In 2 or 3 sentences write a description of the wound, where it was located on the tree, and anything else you noticed that seems to be related to the wound. Was the wound exuding sap? Were there insects present? Was there any unusual growth around the wound? 4. In 2 or 3 sentences describe the health of the tree. Is the tree healthy or unhealthy, did it fully leaf out on all branches, will it survive another year and other observations? 5. NOT GRADED: This is your chance to speculate, how or why was the wound made?
