One of the articles you read in the previous section mentioned some breaches of ethics in a table. Research 5 other ethical breaches in science. For each ethical breach: • Explain what the experiment was • Discuss what the ethical breach was • Discuss how the breach was discovered • Mention any consequences the scientist received • Ex: article retraction, suspension of license, etc • Mention if any follow-up experiments were done Explain why it was important that the breach was discovered and what sort of harm has come/could come if the work was widespread • Cite your sources An example - Andrew Wakefield & vaccines • Andrew Wakefield sought to prove a link between vaccines & disorders • His breach was utter falsification of data. He used children who were already showing signs of autism, or who never developed signs of autism, to claim a link that DID NOT exist. He also subjected children to unnecessarily invasive procedures. Furthermore, he also had a financial interest as he was trying to patent and sell his own vaccine. • The breach was discovered when NO OTHER reputable scientist or group could replicate his findings. There have been numerous studies on if there is a link between vaccines & autism and not a single reputable, peer-reviewed study has corroborated what Andrew Wakefield tried to claim. • He has lost his medical license and is no longer allowed to practice medicine. His article has also been retracted. • There have been numerous follow-up experiments. • This was important to discover as there is NO link between vaccines and autism. Unfortunately, a lot of damage has been done as there is now a very large amount of vaccine hesitancy amongst the population. Diseases that have killed children in the past
