In the lab we grow bacteria on or in media. In addition to colony morphology, cell morphology and staining, the type of media we use can help with the identification process of the bacteria. Things can be added to media to differentiate bacteria or select certain bacteria to preferentially grow. Several of these medias have been reviewed in lecture.
Using your course notes, lab manual and the internet match the following;
Streptococcus pneumonia is alpha hemolytic E.coli on Macconkey agar (lactose fermentor) Neisseria meningitidis grown on Chocolate Agar with antibiotics to suppress non pathogenic growth, gram negative
V Selective (only) media Growth of Staphlyococcus epidermis on Macconkey agar Gamma lysis on blood agar
