1 Time-space diagram Traffic is flowing at a free-flow speed of 30 mi/hr along a street at flow of 2400 veh/hr (State A). The capacity of the roadway is 3600 veh/hr and jam density is 360 veh/mi. (a) What is the headway (sec/veh) and spacing (ft/veh) when the roadway is at capacity? (b) Draw the fundamental diagram. Clearly label all known flow and density values. In addition, label (calculate) the slope (speed) of the congested and uncongested branches. Also label the density at capacity. (C) Vehicles reach a traffic light downstream. Show on the fundamental diagram the flow of vehicles upstream of the light (State A), when stopped at a red light (State B), and the flow as soon as the light turns green (State C). Be sure to calculate and label the flow and density for each state. (a) On the fundamental diagram, show and label the shockwave und between State A and State B. What is the speed of this shockwave? (e) Draw the time-space diagram given a red light of 45 seconds. Draw your plot such that at t = 0 the light just turned red. Be sure to label all slopes and also show the traffic states (A,B,C). Include at least 4 vehicle trajectories on your diagram in addition to the shockwaves. (f) How far back did the queue travel back? (8) What is the minimum green time? This is the time just long enough to allow the last car who joined the queue to get through. (h) Mark the longest queue on the time-space diagram.
