The definition of the system (often implied) identifies the region or collection of substances for which we wish to know some quantities (either functions of state such as temperature, volume, pressure, internal energy, relative enthalpy, entropy etc or path-dependent quantities such as work done on the system or heat transmitted to or from the system). A system can be identified which is either open, closed or isolated. An open system can exchange both energy (by either heat or work) as well as matter with its surroundings. A closed system can exchange energy but NOT matter with its surroundings. An isolated system can exchange neither energy nor matter with its surroundings. An example of an open system might be a mug of coffee, which, as it cools, exchanges heat and also matter (as water vapour) with its surroundings. An example of a closed system might be the contents of a sealed plastic bag, which can exchange heat (by conduction through its walls) and work (by changing its volume) but no matter with its surroundings. An example of something which approximates an isolated system might be the contents of a rigid, sealed thermos flask, which, if idealized, cannot exchange any energy or matter with its surroundings. True or False? True ✓ The surroundings include all that we are not focusing on. True A closed system allows the transfer of heat to the surroundings. True ✓ A spontaneous reaction requires that the enthalpy of the universe increase. False Thermodynamics describes the direction in which a reaction will proceed. False Spontaneous reactions must be fast. Submit Answer Incorrect.
