A trumpet is a classical example of a standing wave produced by one closed end and one open end. Based on your understanding of the physics of standing waves, what do you think the mechanical function of the three valves on the top of the trumpet are? How does this compare to the fretboard (neck) of a stringed instrument such as a guitar or cello?
