1. (1 point) Identify the corner points in the graph below. These must be written as ordered pairs. While this graph is pretty good, hand-drawn graphs are never perfect. • You need to find the corner points for the solution region by a method other than looking/guessing. O 11.5 36 Ta 733 NIM X 0 3x + 2 O 2 3 2y x+y 29 x+2y H₂ ≤23 x.y 20 R ELL 7
2. (5 points) New federal regulations on pollution have resulted in a chemical plant introducing a new, more expensive process to supplement or replace an older process used in the production of a particular chemical. The older process emitted 20 grams of sulfur dioxide and 40 grams of particulate matter into the atmosphere for each gallon of chemical produced. The new process emits 5 grams of sulfur dioxide and 20 grams of particulate matter for each gallon produced. The company makes a daily profit of $0.60 per gallon and $0.20 per gallon on the old and new processes, respectively. If the government allows the plant to emit no more than 16,000 grams of sulfur dioxide and no more than 30,000 grams of particulate matter daily, how many gallons of the chemical can be produced by each process to maximize daily profit? What is the daily profit? The defined variables for this problem are: x = number of gallons of chemical produced by older process y = number of gallons of chemical produced by newer process
y = number of gallons of chemical produced by newer process A. Organize your given information. (This part NOT graded but encouraged.) B. Write the complete linear programming problem, which includes the objective function and all constraints. C. Graph and make sure all lines are labeled and shaded/solution region is clear and easy to identify. Graph must be on graph paper and lines & axes must be straight. (Use a ruler!) Label your lines. D. Create a corner point chart. E. Answer in a complete sentence or two: o How many gallons of the chemical should be produced by each process to maximize daily profit? What is the daily profit? O
